Continuous Updates...

Date: December 11, 2017

Thank you so much, Ben & Friends at HAITI, Inc., for your generous sponsorship of the Luben family as they rebuild their lives after Hurricane Matthew. We are so grateful for all that you are making possible!

Today, the Luben family is earning a living and providing for themselves, thanks to you.

That's the goal of Beyond Borders' Hurricane Matthew Response Program - to ensure that every one of the 228 families we are working with can live independently and with dignity.

Your gift is supporting ongoing training for the Luben family in how to manage their money, start and maintain a savings account, and plan for their future.

Your support is also making it possible for the Luben family to join with other families in Beyond Borders' Hurricane Matthew Response Program to launch a village savings and loan.

You are making agricultural training possible for the Luben family, so they can learn techniques to grow more food and mitigate the impact of drought-caused climate change.

Immediately after Hurricane Matthew hit Lagonav Island, life changed dramatically for the Luben family. They lost nearly everything they had.

Today though, their lives have changed dramatically again, and their hope for the future has been restored - thanks to you and your generous sponsorship.

With deep gratitude,

David Diggs, Director & Co-Founder

We are grateful, Ben & Friends at HAITI, Inc., for your generous sponsorship of the Luben family as they work to make a full recovery from Hurricane Matthew. Thank you!

Because of your support, the Luben family is healthy and working so that they can earn a living, provide for themselves, and start saving for the future.

Your gift supports health education and access to healthcare, clean drinking water, and the construction of a sanitary latrine at the Luben house.

Now, thanks to you, the Luben family is protected from cholera and other waterborne diseases with a water purifier (photo), and they can get medical care if any one of them falls ill, so that they can get better faster and get back to work and school sooner.

All 230 families in Beyond Borders' Hurricane Matthew Response Program are benefiting from these same kinds of health-related initiatives, thanks to sponsors like you.

Your generous sponsorship is making it possible for the Luben family to stay healthy and strong, so that they can build a path for themselves to a brighter future after Hurricane Matthew, one filled with dignity, hope, and opportunity.

Thank you Ben & Friends at HaitiToday., for your generous sponsorship of the Luben family as they work to make a full recovery from Hurricane Matthew.

Your support is equipping the Luben family with the means to earn a living and start saving for the future.

To further ensure their ability to handle whatever may come their way, the Luben family joined with other families where they live to create a community-based savings and loan group.

These groups promote solidarity among neighbors and provide each family with access to capital they can borrow - either in times of trouble or to allow them to invest in and grow their young businesses.

Louinese, a member of her local savings and loan group, talked about what it means to have the ability to borrow money: "It gives me a sense of security, and empowers me to know I can put my money together with others to help another family or to help my family."

All 230 families in Beyond Borders' Hurricane Matthew Response Program are part of a local savings and loan group where they live.

Your generous sponsorship is making it possible for the Luben family to get back on their feet, and build a path to a brighter future after Hurricane Matthew, one filled with dignity, hope, and opportunity.

Ben & Friends at HaitiToday,

Thank you for being a Hurricane Matthew Family Sponsor! I am so grateful for your generosity and your commitment to seeing that the Luben family makes a full recovery from Hurricane Matthew.

The goal of Beyond Borders’ Hurricane Matthew Family Sponsorship Program is to ensure that the Luben family is able to live independently and with dignity.

Here’s an update on the progress that the Luben family is making as they work to develop the means to provide for themselves.

At the beginning of the program, each of the 230 families we are working with, including the Luben family, received two income-generating assets: either livestock to raise and breed, or funds to launch (or relaunch in some cases) a small business. The Luben family selected small business and goats.

To ensure that the Luben family succeeds in becoming economically independent, they are receiving:

  • regular training on how to manage their new assets,

  • help establishing a community-based savings account to use for future expenses, including emergencies,

  • weekly coaching visits from a dedicated caseworker to reinforce skills, build confidence and prepare them to handle any challenges, and,

  • access to healthcare to help keep the family healthy so they are able to keep working.

Today, the total value of their assets is about $159.00! To continue to grow their new assets, the Luben family has a business plan to to buy a cow during the remaining months of your sponsorship.

Here's what Lubin Monette told us your sponsorship means to her and her family: "I am managing well my assets so they can go into more."

Your sponsorship is teaching the Luben family small business skills so that they can earn a living, provide for themselves, and keep their children in school and at home, where they belong.

I’ll continue to keep you updated on the progress that the Luben family is making thanks to you, Ben & Friends at HaitiToday.

Thank you again for your generosity, your care, and your concern for the Luben family. You are giving them a path to a brighter future, filled with dignity, hope, opportunity, and independence.

If you have any questions about what you read here, on any feedback on what you’d like to see in future reports, please let me know.

With deep gratitude,
David Diggs
