Lubin Family Sponsorship - Rationale

Goal: $1,800 - Donated: $1,800 - Goal Reached!

Thank you!

Help Us Support Monette Lubin’s Family Fully Recover from Hurricane Matthew

We are committed to the Beyond Borders project to help families on the island of Lagonav rebuild their lives in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew.  With your support, HAITI Inc will provide $1800 over the next 18 months to help Monette Lubin's family.

Monette Lubin is a single mother who lives with her 6 children ranging in age from 2 to 17 on the island of Lagonav.  Monette’s modest house was essentially destroyed during Hurricane Matthew and she was living off of handouts and charity from others.

We want to help her help herself.  That’s why we have committed to raising $1800 for Beyond Borders to support her over 18 months to get her back on her feet.  We hope you will visit our donation page and help us reach this goal.

With our support, construction of Monette’s new house is nearly complete and all of her school-aged children are back in school. Moving forward she hopes to build a water cistern to collect rainwater from here new roof. Currently she carries water in 5 gallon buckets from far away to meet all her household needs.

Monette now has 5 healthy goats and 13 chickens.  With her weekly “allowance” of 300 gourdes (about $5), she was able to purchase a large sack of rice and a 2 ½ gallon bottle of cooking oil to begin a small business from her home. With proceeds from this business she has been able to repurchase supplies and is getting ready to purchase a pig.

Together with her Beyond Borders community life coach she is developing small business management skills, animal care training and support, training and access to treated potable water through a point of use water filter in her home, health and family planning training and access and is working on three month objectives in each of these areas.

Monette also participates together with fellow neighbors who are in the same Beyond Borders program in a collective savings strategy. Members have created a committee to oversee their collective fund. Each family puts in a weekly amount of at least 50 gourdes, or around $1.00. This represents one “share”.

Individual members may put in as many “shares” as they like. At least once a year any member may borrow at very low interest up to 3 times the amount they have invested.

They have 3 months to pay back the loan. This enables members to make major purchases that can advance their businesses and their buying power.

What the $1,800 Family Sponsorship Provides:

We strongly endorse this project for these reasons:

  • Beyond Borders has been working with communities on Lagonav since 2013 and has a strong relationship with local community leaders and successful community building experience.

  • 100% of the funds raised by Beyond Borders for this project (as well as 100% of the funds we raise) go to the beneficiaries

  • The project aligns well with our goal to support projects that strongly impact individuals, families, and communities and have the potential to be sustainable after a relatively short time
